Get Desktop Alerts in Outlook with IMAP

While not exactly my favorite mail user agent, I do like Outlook for its integrative and synchronization capabilities. Calendar, mail and contacts together with plugins for GoTo Meeting and LinkedIn plus the ability to sync with my Motorola Q phone, make it a good choice for my business.

However, because I use IMAP on Linux for my mail delivery and storage system, I loose a lot of features and gain a number of usability issues. Chief amongst the loses is the Desktop Alerts which are a nice way to be subtly notified of new mail. When you use IMAP, these don’t function.

However, while putting some other filtering rules in place, I found that I could put a rule in place that shows the alert for each email new email that gets delivered to my inbox. Problem solved.

I’m working on the rest of the issues such as shared calendars, search folders and moving deleted items to the “Trash” folder.
